Hi, thanks for your visit. Today I want to tell you about a very topical issue in the country, I mean the Bailey bridges, which seem to be populating our landscapes throughout our territory. Well, this type of bridges has an interesting history and I want to share it with you.

Origin, why its name?

Its origin dates from the Second World War. It is named after Donald Bailey who had a hobby of making model bridges. His superiors decided that one of his designs had potential and began to develop it.

What advantages does it offer over other types of bridges?

It allows its construction without the use of special tools or heavy equipment. The transfer of its components can be done in trucks. Once installed, it offers great resistance to the weight and continuous passage of vehicles.

The parts that make up the bridge are made of standard steel alloys, these can be supplied by various manufacturers and are interchangeable. The modular design allows to create bridges as large, long and strong as necessary.

A war hero?

There were many events involving these bridges, but one particularly interesting happened on the river Saar river (between France and Germany) around 1942. A Bailey bridge was installed over this river while there was artillery fire and tanks. After the attack, the surface of the bridge had holes, so they had to put a new floor on top of the one that was damaged.
