GPS systems: Do you know how they work?

GPS systems: Do you know how they work? I appreciate your visit. On this occasion I would like to describe a technology used in vehicles and devices of many kinds, I mean GPS (or Global Positioning Systems, for its acronym in English). Have you ever wondered how one of these devices works?

GPS, is it a device or something else?

People who refer to a GPS device usually talk about a GPS receiver. The Global Positioning System is made up of a network of twenty-nine (29) satellites that orbit the earth. Most are operational, but five of them are as a replacement for one that ceases to operate.

Description of a satellite

These were launched by the United States Army. The approximate weight of one of these devices is 1,800 Kilograms and its power source is solar. The original use of this satellite network was military, but it was soon made available to the public. Each satellite travels at a speed close to 19,000 km / h and completes two times around the earth per day. The position and speed of each satellite allows that at least four satellites are always visible from any point on the earths surface.

Trilateracion, the GPS trick

This is a process The math that the GPS receiverperforms and consists of the following steps:

1.Locate four or more satellites on the network.

2.Each satellite makes a continuous emission of radio waves.

3.With the travel time of the waves, the distance to each satellite is calculated.

4.Each distance represents an imaginary sphere, which intersects with the other points.

5.When the calculated spheres of each satellite intersect, a single point is obtained.

6.The device consults a map database (online, or local) and downloads the section.

7.The final location information is displayed as a dot on a map section.

Do you want to see it in action?

The following video shows how it works. or a GPS receiver from the point of view of the three basic systems. It also adds the navigation system that is a route recommendation based on the direction of the roads in the information on the maps.

The principle of this widely used technology is quite simple. The most impressive thing about it is how quickly the world is connected and how small it has become.
